This laptop IBM T42 laptop was brought to us because of Laptop displaying Fan error during Boot up. The customer said she has to press “Escape” button to bypass and continue loading into Windows or else Laptop will automatically turn off after the warning message.

We brought back the laptop for inspection. We notice even though laptop can load into Windows but the Fan error warning message appeared for a reason which the fan detected by system wasn’t spinning. Therefore, the error display to warn user to be alerted. If user continuously uses the laptop with poor cooling and ventilation will affected to the motherboard and GPU. A massive problem will occur, especially it has an ATI graphic chipset on the motherboard.

The heatsink fan was joined together by an iron inside the hole. Normally typical heatsink fans will use screws to joint both HSF but this time they design such a way to not let us easily remove the fan out of the heat sink.

So it can be done by drilling the iron that welded to the heat sink fan. So for this job we asked the help of a car accessory shop because they have the tiny drill bit to do the job.

After the iron successfully removed, the fan can easily detached.

As we have the ibm t41 Heat sink fan used spare part in our store, but the ibm t41 HSF was different because of the t41 laptop system did not come with GPU. That’s why we cannot swap the HSF instead we swap the fan, so the IBM t41 HSF also require drilling to detach both heat sink and fan.

After successful of removing the fan parts. We use the conventional way which the use of screws instead of iron to join back the Working IBM t41 fan to the ibm t42 heat sink.

The ibm t41 fan was tested before and it working and compatible, similar shape it spin right after the laptop power up.

We completed the installation by applying new thermal paste and reuse back the thermal pad as it still in good condition. Finally we tested the system and it normally boot up without any error and fan automatically spinning right after pressing the power button.
